Flagging off the programme, President Jonathan who was represented by the Honourable Minister of Health, Dr. Khaliru Alhassan, commended all the stakeholders in the National Health Insurance Scheme for their sustained efforts at tackling various diseases in the country, especially the victory over Ebola disease.

He commended the NHIS and the telecom operators in the country on their collaborative efforts in putting Nigerians on the National Mobile Health Insurance programme platform, adding that this will further eliminate the spread of communicable diseases and bring health to millions of Nigerians through their telephone handsets.

The President enjoined Nigerians to imbibe the habit of “hand washing and personal hygiene so as to eliminate the spread of diseases among our people.” He used the occasion to flag off the Hand Sanitization Distribution Campaign in the country.

In his address, the Chief Executive Officer of NHIS, Dr. Femi Thomas, said that the National Mobile Health Insurance programme was the first to happen anywhere in the world, adding that his team travelled all over the world including the United States of America to see how the Obamacare health project works, but returned with the conclusion that we have to develop our initiatives to suit our environment.

Against this background, the NHIS sought the collaborative efforts of telecoms operators to implement the mobile health initiative.

He paid glowing tribute to Globacom and other telecoms operators in the country for providing their infrastructure for this initiative to run. According to him, “we recognize the contribution of Globacom and other operators that have helped us to run this maiden initiative on their platform.”

Dr. Thomas added that over 40m Nigerians are expected to register on this platform with the launch.

Globacom developed the Glo Health Cover mobile health which guarantees its customers and other Nigerians free consultation and medication in over 8,000 hospitals in the country.
According to Mr. Sam Edoho, National Sales Coordinator (North-West), the Glo Health Cover is one of the exciting ways Globacom empowers Nigerians. He explained that good health leads to a better and long life, and encouraged Nigerians to take advantage of the Glo Health Cover.

He said that the initiative comes with attractive benefits which include “free medicines at NHIS accredited pharmacies, extensive maternal and child health services, and unlimited visits and health cover value.”

To access the numerous benefits, “all a subscriber needs to do is to dial *616# on his mobile phone and he will be welcomed to the Glo Health platform where you will register,” said Edoho.
