iPhone 15 could be armed with new Sony sensor twice as capable as current cameras

Presumably, we’re still ten solid months away from revealing Apple’s upcoming iPhone lineup, and iPhone 15 series, but the rumor mills are already running wild. The latest leak is about iPhone 15’s camera.

One of the major software upgrades The iPhone 14 range was the new main camera for the Pro models, and while we don’t expect Apple to increase the megapixel count again, camera performance is still expected to improve significantly.

New Nikki Asia report (trans 9to5Mac) claims that Sony has developed a new camera sensor that doubles the saturation signal level. This means that it will have twice the light-gathering capacity of current sensors. This should theoretically help reduce noise and improve dynamic range.

The report adds that this will also help with overexposure (extremely bright images with loss of detail in the brightest part) and underexposure (extremely dark images with loss of detail in the darkest areas), allowing the iPhone 15 camera to produce clear images in difficult conditions, such as when The subject is against strong backlight. It looks like the sensor will try to balance background and foreground exposure to achieve this.

The sensor will use a new semiconductor architecture that will separate photodiodes and pixel transistors onto different layers rather than placing them on the same substrate.

Sony is not developing this sensor technology exclusively for Apple and it will also ship to other smartphone makers
The bottom line is that the new sensor technology could give the iPhone 15 an edge over the current one Top camera phones. The higher end model, which is probably best known as The iPhone 15 Ultra, not the iPhone 15 Pro Max, is also likely to have a periscope zoom module for better optical zoom.

Other brands are also making their move, so it’s going to be a close battle. Samsung, for example, tends to outfit the upcoming Galaxy S23 Ultra with a 200MP camera. Others like Vivo and Xiaomi are experimenting with 1-inch sensors.

Going back to the iPhone 15, cosmetic changes are also expected. Reports said that the new models — or at least the higher-end models — could feature more premium titanium materials, curved edges, and Solid state buttons.

It is almost a given that the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Ultra will be armed with a new 3nm chip. Also, unlike previous years, there will be A marked differentiation between the two top models.
