Microsoft has typically concentrated on mid-range phones under its Lumia brand. But the firm could be looking to take aim at the likes of the iPhone 6 and Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge with the launch of two high-end devices this summer. Rumours suggest the devices will be called 'Cityman' and Talkman' and will have 5.7-inch and 5.5-inch displays respectively. Phone site Unleash The Phones is said to have gained 'exclusive' access to details of the two phones, including specifications.
According to its reports, the 'Cityman' will run on a Qualcomm octa-core processor, 3GB of RAM and have 32GB of built-in storage. It will have a microSD card slot, plus a 20MP rear camera and a 5MP camera on the front. The battery will reportedly be a 3300mAh device. By comparison, the Talkman will run a hexa-core Qualcomm processor and have a 3000mAh battery, but have the same storage and camera specifications.
The iPhone 6 has a 4.7-inch screen and 1810 mAh battery, the iPhone 6 Plus is larger on both counts with a 5.5-inch display and 2915mAh battery. Although only speculation at this point, Microsoft will likely wait until the release of its Windows 10 operating system, scheduled for 'this summer', to announce new handsets. It said it will launch the software in 190 countries and 111 languages.
Microsoft has yet to provide a precise date for the launch, but said it is aimed at powering PCs, phones and also connected devices such as bank machines and medical equipment. The firm recently suggested it was working with Qualcomm for an upcoming flagship device and the processors listed in the rumoured speculation could be Snapdragon 810 and 808 respectively. Following the announcement about Windows 10, Microsoft was said to be working with fast-growing Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi to test the software on its devices.
The US tech giant additionally announced partnerships with Chinese-based Tencent and Lenovo to help customers in China upgrade to Windows 10.
